Tottenism Tuesday: Common Sense

Updated: Jun 12, 2023

"Make common sense common practice."

This week’s Tottenism comes from a good friend of mine, Clive Brewer. He and I met probably about 10 years ago at the East Tennessee State University Coaches Conference and hit it off right away with some great conversations about training philosophies and sport in general, often until the wee hours of the morning (didn’t hurt that we closed the bar once or twice!). He was one of the speakers at the conference and I immediately realized this guy knew his stuff. If you ever have a chance to listen to one of his talks on any of a variety of training methodologies, I highly recommend it. Not only is he a great speaker with a ton of knowledge, he also has a ton of practical experience in strength training and conditioning for rugby, soccer, tennis and even professional baseball! Over the years, I was able to gather many tidbits of information from him and one that struck a chord was a very simple one: “Make Common Sense Common Practice”. Think about it. How many times have you seen really smart people with really smart ideas, somehow make things way more complicated than they need to be? Or when a simple, common sense approach would be a much better way of dealing with the issue. If you take the common sense approach, it invariably will be the best approach. Make it a habit to practice this every day and your life will be a lot less complicated and more productive! (PS Thank you, Clive!)
