Tottenism Tuesday: What Exactly is a "Gym Coach"?

Following up on the Tottenism on being a professional, I have a pet peeve that I need to get off my chest. From the time I was in 7th grade, I just knew that I wanted to teach and coach. I was fortunate to have had some outstanding mentors and role models along the way and that made my career choice a really easy one. Getting my Physical Education degree meant finding the best schools that were known for that major. West Chester State College (now West Chester University) was one of the top schools in the nation for Physical Education so that was a great fit for me. One of the many things I was taught while at West Chester was to have a respect for the profession. Notice that I have not used the term “PE” or “gym teacher” or “gym coach”. It is Physical Education and it is a profession that deserves respect. So, when I heard an advertisement for the “Saved by the Bell” reboot and they said that Slater was a “gym coach”, well, it set me off and I just had to write about it. Those of us who choose to teach and coach and have a passion for continual growth for ourselves as well as the students and athletes we work with, well, that is a pretty cool deal!
